birth day:
welcome to the world, my sweet baby! we thought that all was well, but that was not the case. you had a rough start. faith, there were so many prayers and blessings made on your behalf; so many people who loved you. you pulled through, my little miracle girl. i tried to prepare myself if you needed to return to our Heavenly Father, it was very difficult not being able to take you home with me when i left the hospital. i was very grateful to our Heavenly Father for letting you stay with us here on earth and be a part of our lives; for giving me the chance to be your mother and watch you grow:

wait- what happened when she was born?
happy birthday faith! i miss having her at the beach with us!
ashley -- when she was born they found out she had something called transposition of the great arteries (TGA). it is a congenital heart defect that they usually pick up on ultrasound when the babies are still in utero, but they didn't with her. they just noticed her turning a little blue a few hours after birth, so that night she needed to get a cardiac catheter up into her thigh to her heart where they had to keep a hole that babies are born with (and which starts to close after birth) open. that was the only way she was getting oxygen. what happens with this defect is that the two main arteries of the heart are not crossed, as they should be. so, the blood that needs oxygen isn't going to the lungs to get any. she was born on a saturday morning, had surgery that night, and then was air-ambulanced up to california (stanford) for open-heart surgery on monday. it was a total shock for me, for all of us. doug flew up that night and after i got cleared by the dr. i flew up thursday and she had her surgery the following monday. she seems all-clear for now, she just needs to see a cardiologist annually to make sure her heart is growing and functioning as it should. and she'll need to take some specific antibiotics prior to certain dental procedures - to prevent infection - for the rest of her life. but hey, you'd never guess all that from looking at her, huh? the randomest thing: another kid in my parents' ward was born with the exact same thing a few years before faith and it's a very rare condition. doctors don't know why it happens. but we were very blessed with faith.
Happy Birthday Faithy!
You are a strong mother Liko. And Faith is a strong little 4 year old too. Happy Birthday.

What a crazy amazing story. Child birth is hard enough, I can't even imagine going through something like that. oh, and we are so old. Four years huh.
