Kuhio Day at Mokuleia

I REMEMBER BEACH DAYS as a kid - after school, Saturdays, and all summer long!!  We would frequent Castles (close to home) and would venture further to Shark's Cove and Waimea on weekends, holidays and summertime.  We'd go early in the morning to beat the crowds and get our parking spot of choice.  We came prepared with snorkel gear, fins, and a cooler full of lunch, fruit and water.  It would be an all-day event.  Sometimes we'd stay 'til the sun set.  It was great!  We'd take soap and shampoo when we were younger and would bathe in the beach showers with our swimsuits on -- mom's idea, pretty smart one, too, considering there were six of us and who wants to fight trying to get tired kids to take a bath once we got home?  We also made sure to rinse all our beach gear - boards, snorkels, fins - otherwise that salt will ruin em.  If we happened to go to a beach without a shower, we'd refill gallon-sized jugs with water and keep some on-hand in the car trunk; they'd be nice and warm from the sun and we'd use them to rinse off the salt.  We kept huge, empty garbage bags in the car to use as 'waterproof' seat covers.  Us kids usually knocked out on the car ride home - even on the short drive from Castles or Temple beach!  Ah, gotta love the beach!  What a great, free playground to enjoy and explore!

WHEN WE WERE REALLY LITTLE, we'd park at my aunty's house in Laie and walk across the highway to Clissolds (some of you call it 'Bikini beach') -- it's also where I was baptized early one morning and confirmed at the beach house with window-walls that's no longer there -- and we'd make our way down to bathtub beach.  When we started getting tired, we'd walk back and hose off at aunty's.  I still remember that one day we were swimming in the evening at Clissolds, near the point, and Makana and Ailona went further out with their masks and three-prongs.  They came back with a huge ulua, mom and aunty didn't believe they actually speared it because it was so big and thought that it was already dead when they got it.  But they swore they did.  And grandpa cooked that fish right up when we got back for all to enjoy.

WE'D SET UP in the middle dry section at Shark's Cove, you have to wade through water to get there.  Older kids would help the younger ones to cross.  The little ones would play in the shallow, sandy spot and the older ones would venture over the rocks into deeper waters.  Sometimes we would explore the tide pools on the rock shelf.  Dad would collect intact urchin shells.  Being with cousins always made it more enjoyable.  The boys would go cave diving/exploring and have competitions on who could bring the biggest, heaviest rock up to the surface.  I remember one time when someone got bit by an eel on the finger in their attempt to grab a rock.  It was pretty funny!  Of course the adults didn't think so.  We'd also go and jump from the rock into the deep, middle section of water where all the scuba divers explored.  Sometimes we'd bask in their bubbles floating up to the surface, it felt like we were swimming in soda!   And that one time when we tried to coax Alohi into swimming through the cave.  She didn't want to, but we talked her into it and she ended up bonking her head real good and the ginormous bump on her forehead appeared within seconds, along with her wailing.  Mom wasn't too happy about that one, either.

AT WAIMEA, our spot would be right past the jumping rock, at the far end of the beach near the "toilet bowl", as we called it.  We would swim out to the various rock islands and warm up laying on the sun-soaked black lava rocks.  My dad would swim far, far out with us, and sometimes there would be pods of dolphins.  Sometimes there were kona crab on the ocean floor and he would dive way down and grab them.  Certain times of the year the water would be black from huge schools of oama.  If you slapped down hard on the surface with your palm while looking underwater with a mask, the whole school would split and you could see the sandy ocean floor.  I remember nothing tasting sweeter or better than juicy, ripe oranges after hours in the salty ocean.  We'd swim 'til our lips were purple and our fingers and toes were wrinkly.  We'd swim until the sun started dipping below the horizon, leaving our little bodies with no heat source.  That's when it was time to head home.

MY DAD AND BROTHER would go on night dives.  That was one of their hobbies.  Nothing like fresh fish and lobster.  I miss their catches!  Especially the mouth-watering lobster omelets my dad would cook up!

WHEN I WAS PREGNANT, one of my favorite things was going swimming in the ocean.  That weightlessness in cool water kept my very pregnant self sane in the sizzling summer months.  Me and Doug would go swimming and snorkeling whenever we got the chance.  I remember one of our snorkels on the reef near Kahana Bay yielded us a large 7-11 crab.  I spotted it tangled in an old net stuck on the reef.  We had nothing to cut it out with, so we got creative using coral and rocks to get it untangled.  Then we walked home and cooked it up and it was ono!

I LOVE THE OCEAN.  Everything about it.  I have come to respect it.  I've come to know the tides, its moods.  Being in it is therapeutic for me.  I think if I ever had to move away, it's what I'd miss most about Hawaii, aside from the family and friends that reside here.  It's great to watch my kids come to know and enjoy it, too.

beautiful butterfly

We gathered some caterpillars and watched them eat 'til they got fat.  Then we watched them morph into chrysalis' and finally saw them turn into beautiful monarch butterflies.  I remember having an entire HUGE aquarium-full of caterpillars in Kindergarten.  Over one weekend, some had gotten out and come Monday morn, there were chrysalis' all over the classroom!  Under desks, behind chairs -- it was very exciting!

kung foo, slip-n-slide, and poi balls

mommy, daddy, angela
at grandma and grandpa ho's house with the cousins

Last week Friday my mom and two sisters flew away to Alaska.  Tear.  So I am back to being the lone former Kahuku-Ho in the islands.  I really enjoyed them and it was a treat to have my mom here for a nice long stay.  Thank you mama, Alohi, and Angela for all you did!
In an effort to get back into mom groove without my mommy here helping, I wanted to keep the summer fun rolling on for the kids without disruption.  So on Monday I took them to watch Kung Foo Panda 2 and we enjoyed it!  This is the first summer I'm having to work since my kids have been in school and I want to make the most of my days off enjoying it with them.  They have been staying with my aunty while Doug and I work.  At her house they ride bikes like crazy and on Wednesday they had a slip-n-slide party with Nicole - thank you guys for taking good care of our kids!  Doug and I really appreciate it!

Today we went to PCC as a family - it was Faith and Malik's first time.  They got spray-on tattoos and we watched the Polynesian Odyssey in the IMAX.   We rode the canoe, saw the canoe show and hit up the Samoan and Maori villages.  I purchased annual passes so we will most likely be going again to see the other villages and the night show.  The kids loved watching the coconut-tree climbing and fire-making.  Faith insisted on doing the poi balls, and I showed her some moves I remembered from my fourth grade New Zealand May Day performance.  It was a good day.

bookworms

can you feel it?

i think i feel a bit of chill in the air. or at least something cooler than it's been lately.

and today there was rain.

i'm actually anticipating the cooler, damper weather.

today, we were home-bodies and read lots of books. good, old-fashioned, simple, educational entertainment. at the kaneohe friends of the library book sale last week, we picked up some treats. i am a book hoarder and that is something i don't have a problem with. one can never have too many good books in their home. at least that's my philosophy. faith and malik love Love LOVE to read and can pleasantly pass the time looking at books on their own. they revel in me reading to them and that brings me great joy.

this book sale is great because every time i go, i find all kinds of wonderful books to take home. and it usually ends up costing me less than the price of probably the cheapest book in borders. so that's another reason i'm okay with it. and the kids love it, too, because they get to choose what books they want. we browse and have fun making our selections.

i adore vintage books. the older, the better. i like their character and always wonder about their history. maybe it has something to do with watching 'the neverending story' one too many times as a kid. that old book store intrigued me.

almost every 'little golden book' we ended up getting is nearly fifty to sixty years old. how awesome is that?! best of all, a lot of them were my favorites when i was little and a nostalgia for my childhood awakens. while i may not recall exactly what the story was about, the pictures delighted me. and, call me sentimental, they still do.

anyway, here are some new additions to our library from the book sale:

and this is one i hope to get on my shelf soon:
thanks for tuning me in to this book sale, echo!
happy reading, everyone!

dear mom and dad,

thank you for creating such a delightful childhood for me and my siblings.
i remember it being fun, safe, full of laughter and joy.
so carefree, so many great, happy memories.
so imperfectly perfect.
i'll be eternally grateful.
i hope my children can say the same thing someday.
i'll love you forever.

siskel and ebert

remember those guys? man, there are just sooo many movies coming out that i wanna go and see. chances are, i will probably end up waiting until they are out on dvd to see them...bummer, but it's just the cost-effective thing to do sometimes. however, i feel there are certain movies that merit being viewed in-theater in order to attain the full effect -- know what i mean? in that case, i will have to do the matinee because movies are just too damned expensive nowadays if you gotta pay full-price.
here are some that are catching my interest:

-transformers 2 (i really liked the first one - awesome special effects, also watched the cartoon, and i hear it's awesome)
-star trek (loved the t.v. series, NOT freakishly/obsessively)
-terminator (um, because of christian bale)
-g.i. joe (watched the cartoon religiously)
-harry potter (i'm a fan)
- angels and demons (i enjoyed The Da Vinci Code)

oh, and in november, i will definitely be going to see New Moon in the theater (got that one penciled-in on my calendar already), just because i kinda LOVE the Twilight series.

...and HAPPY BIRTHDAY, aunty ANGELA!!!

we all love and miss you lots!!!

have a spectacular day, you old fart!

Happy Mother's Day!!!

to all the moms i know.
but most especially to the lovely woman in these old photos,
who is my mama forever.

i ♥ you, mom.

4.01.2009

you know this book? i went to costco today and it's about $19something, for those interested. and i also saw a singer sewing machine with a whole bunch of different stitches - that was a bit more expensive than the book. a girl can dream, right?

now that i (try to) sew, i notice these kinds of things and have also come to appreciate beautiful fabric. when i was younger and my mom would go to the fabric store, i always got so bored (fast) and wondered when she was going to be done so we could LEAVE. hehe. now, i have become her and my kids are the ones nagging at me to hurry up.

just reduced!!!

the lovely home i grew up in is now being listed at $599,000.00 - a great price for what you get (compared to some other things on the market)!!! i will be sad to see it go.

this is the front yard (click on pictures to see detail):
this is the front room and main bathroom:
there are 5 bedrooms:
this is the master bedroom with half-bath:
this is the back room, looking towards the front at dining area/kitchen and study room, and the view out the back room windows (you can see the shrimp farms and ocean yonder - no neighbors back here!):
this is the dining area and kitchen (all-new appliances):
this is the washroom and second full bathroom:
and this is the deck off of the washroom (it's now painted and looks even more awesome - great for BBQ's!) my kids spent a great deal of time riding their bikes and cars back here *tear*:
the house is about 2,400 sq. ft. and the ground-level of the back of the house has potential for being remodeled into more living space. right off the deck is a clothesline. there are two carports and a big built-in shed off the main garage for storage (or maybe teeny rental?). it is fully fenced. it's a really great house in a great neighborhood. i grew up walking to school (elementary through high school). there is a nice, big park down the road where there are basketball courts, a baseball field and where lots of soccer games are played on saturdays, along with a playground and bathrooms. it is not in a flood or tsunami zone and you have a view of the mountains. it's perfect. and if we were employed and had the money, it would be ours.
