so this year, i spent no money on costumes or anything. faith wanted to be Pocahontas - this is just my take on native american garb. and malik wanted to be a mummy. i used what i had in my stash - aside from the fringe for faith (gotta thank sheila for picking some up for me ON SALE AT WALMART and it was free - until i pay her back, that is! haha!) and thank goodness for having TONS of cheap muslin on-hand, because that's basically what their costumes are made of!
malik's take on what a mummy looks like (i also tied some extra scraps around his hands, neck, and head to finish off the look {and he kept them on for a while, until he got too hot and asked me to take the head one off} and put some pale makeup with dark shading around his eyes and mouth - it looked pretty awesome, just take my word for it).
first of all, lemme just say i MEANT to make the bottom of faith's dress like Pocahontas's - with the pointy cut. BUT, i seem to have forgotten all about doing that when i cut it out and when i finally remembered, i was too far into making it to even want to consider going back and fixing it.
when faith first saw her dress, she said,"why is it white? {even if it's NOT white} it's supposed to be brown." and then she proceeded to grab a book with a picture of Pocahontas and started pointing out ALL the MANY ways it didn't look exactly like Pocahontas's semi-naked dress. and then she started saying she wanted to wear makeup and make her hair all fancy, while i argued that Pocahontas doesn't wear makeup and leaves her hair down...

but then she got over it quick - especially when i told her she could wear my turquoise necklace, just like the one Pocahontas wears (heehee!) and when she realized i spent time making the costume especially for her.
busted out the trick-or-treating bags i made two or three years ago from storage - they are holding up good, but as soon as they start wearing thin, i will re-do them in a canvas or upholstery (thicker, more durable) fabric.
checking out their stash - i think we're good with the amount of candy they got at the trunk-or-treat. but i'll probably still end up taking them out on Halloween night - awesome mom that i am. (oh, and i had faith wear my good wool hiking socks to sorta look like moccasins....sorta...)
and i wasn't going to be anything, but then i just got out some black pants and my striped shirt and did a rush face painting job to look kinda like a mime, except i didn't have a beret or suspenders or white gloves AND i was TALKING the entire night so everyone was thinking i was a clown...whatever.
and doug didn't want to be anything, as spontaneous and adventuresome as he is.
i spent the night making shaved ice (with the manual cranking kind of machine) and cotton candy - now i'm a pro at it.
