yurts and things

ever heard of a yurt?

well on monday,  i had the opportunity to help my friend sew her home - the vinyl siding of their yurt.  you can buy a kit and set it up, but they did the math and found it to be cheaper to make it themselves.  they even scored old cedar from byuh's gym for free to repurpose as flooring.

a few years ago, doug started mentioning buying a parcel of land somewhere and setting up a yurt.
if you've ever seen the movie 'babies' on netflix, a yurt is what that mongolian family lives in.  it's like a luxurious tent you can pack up and move if you need to.  lately, doug's idea has evolved into having an actual house, for security reasons.

i've been feeling the urge to buy up a piece of land, build a ranch style house (if a house isn't already existing on said land), and try to live in a self-sustainable way - complete with a cow for milk, maybe some more cattle for meat, some sheep (for wool to sell), goats (for milk), chickens (to eat and for eggs), and garden.  my dream plot of land would have old fruit trees - apples, peaches, avocados, mango, banana, berries, depending on location of course.  i would learn to can and preserve the fruit and my kids would have a yard to play in.  this is something i have been yearning for.  i know it would be a commitment as well as a lot of work.  but this is a dream of mine - to be self-sufficient.

my friend jessica and her husband liam are going to lease a piece of land, set up a yurt and have some goats, chickens, and a garden.  i'm excited for them and can't wait to see how it plays out!

Hey, Liko. I think that we were on each other's blogs at the same time. I just read your comment after looking at your blog. Coolio.
Those yurts are pretty cool. They look so roomy and stylish.
About your dream of self sufficient living - that's awesome, go for it! We're trying to get there, too. So far it has been totally satisfying. I really need a green thumb, though.
Hope that you're having a good day! :)
